Backing up quickly after the successful Festival State Cup event, Whyalla Kart Club held round five of its regular club championship on August 3.
Once again this meeting was made possible due to the sponsorship of local businesses.
This event was sponsored by Richards Lock and Safe.
The club appreciates all of its sponsors and encourages them to come and see the racing they are helping happen each month.
Also this month several drivers stood down from racing to help stewards and start races.Without drivers stepping down from racing for the weekend others would not be able to compete.
The club also thanks these people for their commitment to the club.
The Sportsman SA class started the racing in round five and as per usual it was on from the start.
Darrol Jones quickly moved from position five to first place to settle into a rhythm and take the race.
This however was not the case for second to fourth with Karl Lawson, Robert Butt and Chris Reid fighting hard for second and third.
Heat two produced some interesting racing with Robert Butt holding onto a strong second place when he ran a little wide and spun, allowing Chris Reid and Karl Lawson to take second and third places.
All five drivers started strong and remained close to each other.
A spin in the middle of the pack just after the first lap scattered Karts to avoid a major incident, unfortunately sending drivers into the infield.
Chris Reid then led the group to the finish.
The cadets again provided some close racing with regular to Whyalla driver Tyler Craig driving solidly all day to snare the top of the podium at the completion of the day.
Tyler however did not have it easy with his close mate Aaron Oliver pushing him all the way and Whyalla driver Cooper Jones also pushing him hard.
The cadet racing over the weekend also produced a personal best for Aiden Stephens and new to karting, Corey Datson producing some competitive times in his first race meeting.
These young drivers are ones to watch as they always produce close interesting racing with what is usually one of the largest fields each meeting.
The restricted 125/clubman heavy and restricted 125/clubman light combined racing trialed something different this meeting with the heavy boys leading the lighter drivers at the start of the race.
This provided some additional challenges to both groups, the lighter and little bit faster guys having to fight through the other class who were having their own race in their own right. This however did not appear to bother Chris Reid who set a blinder of a lap has now been recorded as the new reverse lap record for a restricted 125 light kart, a quick time of 26.534.
The new time is 0.024 seconds off the old record.
Does not sound like much, but when all karts run to a power to weight parity small margins of time are hard to come by.
