Karting has revved in the Piper family for around 20 years, and the tradition is continuing with 20-year-old Matt.
“My dad raced karts since he was in his 20’s so I guess it’s been a bit of a family sport,” Matt said.
Having been involved in the motor sport since he was 15, Matt is eager to make his impression on the karting world and will this weekend compete in the 2014 Bob Hinde Memorial race which will draw 210 competitors to Grenfell.
Paired with his Monaco kart and KT100J engine, Matt will race in the Senior National Pro class against 26 other karting enthusiasts.
The Forbes local said he hopes the upcoming race will give him a good indication of his ability for the NSW State Titles which will also be held in Grenfell on the first weekend of October.
“This weekend I hope to get some experience for the state titles,” Matt said.
“It would be great to finish in the top five this round and if I finished in the top 10 overall at state I’d be pretty happy.”
This year the Grenfell track has received significant renovations including patch work as well as construction of a new covered outgrid.
Matt is a member of the Combined Districts Kart Club which is based in Lithgow which has wheeled out a line of motor sport champions including Mark Winterbottom, James Courtney and Ryan Briscoe.
He said he loves being a part of the sport and club.
“I love the friendly atmosphere, the socialising, the speed and intensity,” he said.
“It’s great because you’re racing against competitors that are in it 100 per cent and the challenge of trying to win is there.”
Matt wished to thank his sponsors.
“I’d like to thank Shayne Piper Race Engines, Blue Sky Outdoor Forbes and Upfront Karting for supporting my racing.”
