James Anagnostiadis on the top step of the podium in Spain.

Victorian teenager James Anagnostiadis has claimed a sensational victory in the opening round of the 2025 FIA Karting European Championship (OK category), held at the Circuito Internacional de Karting Campillos in Spain.

The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Junior driver was a standout performer across the weekend, combining great speed with race-winning composure to secure victory in the Final.

With the win, Anagnostiadis joins an elite group of Australian drivers to have triumphed in the European Championship – including Jack Doohan, who won a round of the OK-Junior class in 2017, and Jon Targett, who claimed a round victory in the Formula Super A category back in 1992.

In the OK-Junior category, fellow Australian William Calleja also delivered a remarkable performance, finishing third in a hotly contested Final. It marks a historic achievement for Australian karting, with Anagnostiadis and Calleja becoming the first Aussie drivers to stand on the podium in both the OK and OK-Junior classes at the same FIA Karting European Championship event.

Lewis Francis showed impressive speed throughout the heats in the OK class to secure a spot in the Final but was unfortunately sidelined mid-race following an incident. In the OK-Junior class, Sebastian Eskandari-Marandi displayed solid pace throughout the event but narrowly missed out on qualification for the Final.

The strong showing in Spain highlights the depth and talent of Australia’s rising stars on the world stage, as attention now turns to Round 2 of the Championship, set to take place May 1–4 at the Portimao circuit in Portugal.
