New South Wales teenager John Iafolla added to his ever growing resume of karting achievements with a pair of victories in the Northern Territory Sprint Kart Championships on Sunday.
Iafolla, who is the reigning national champion in the Junior National Heavy class, proved too good for his opposition in both the Junior National Light and Heavy classes at the event.
Local driver Filip Kapitula outpaced the Scuderia PCR Australia driver in qualifying and opening heat of Junior National Heavy before Iafolla fought back to claim the wins in all remaining races. In the final, Iafolla greeted the chequered flag 1.3 seconds clear of Jordan Smith. Daniel Stewart finished third.
It was a similar case in Junior National Light for Iafolla with Queenslander Ryan Suhle claiming the fastest qualifying time before Iafolla went on to succeed in both heat races and the pre-final. Suhle then led the way in the final, shadowed by Iafolla for the duration. It wasn’t until the final lap that Iafolla took over the front running to cross the line 0.340 seconds clear of Suhle. Tomas Gasparek finished third.
In the X30 Light class, local driver Kevin Norman was the early pacesetter, however, the experience of Kip Foster shone through in the final to take the win. Local driver Chris Gatt finished second ahead of Liam Ferry.
For the local drivers, Bryce Fullwood claimed a pair of victories in Junior Clubman and Junior Rotax while Royce Nott added another State crown to his name in the X30 Heavy class.
Western Australian Nathan Davis won Clubman Light while Queenslander Bayley Douglas and Gabriel Gasparek were victorious in the Cadets and Rookies classes respectively.
