Karratha’s Nicholas Rowe was a standout performer in the 2011 Nash Bros. Western Australian Sprint Kart Championships hosted by the Albany City Kart Club on the weekend.
Rowe was victorious in the Junior Clubman category, he also finished runner-up in the Junior National Heavy class behind Perth driver Jake Klarich.
Rowe and Klarich lined up on the front row for the Junior Clubman final, however, a carburetor issue dropped Klarich to eighth on the opening lap. The issue for Klarich allowed Rowe and Jason LeCocq to open a handy buffer over the rest of the field.
The leading duo then swapped positions as Klarich was clawing his way back into contention – as was Kalgoorlie’s Anthony Martin who won both heat races before crossing the line 10th in a rain soaked pre-final.
With two laps remaining Rowe had managed to shrug off the challenges by LeCocq and held on for the victory.
In the Junior National Heavy final it was a three way affair with Rowe, Klarich and Martin exchanging the top three places on over a dozen occasions throughout the race.
Moments after the trio got the last lap signal, Klarich went from first to third and then when Rowe made a move to take over the lead from Martin half a lap later it allowed the Lenzo pilot to regain the positions he lost earlier in the lap.
In the end it was Klarich who held on for the narrowest of victories ahead of Rowe and Martin.
In the Midgets division, where 23 youngsters lined up on the grid, it was Sam Dicker who won his second state championship of the year (his first came in July at the NT Titles). His run to the victory was far from easy however Brock Kenny and local driver Keb Evans shadowing Dicker’s ever move.
Nikola Mitic continued his good run of success to claim the win in the Rookies class while James French edged out Siobhan Sutherland victory in Senior National Light to win by seven one-thousandths of a second.
Wins in other categories went to Jason Hounsfield (Senior National Heavy), Bryce Fullwood (Junior National Light), Don Kuhm (Leopard Light), Lee Foster (Clubman Super Heavy), Graham Donald (Rotax Heavy), Lewis Sutherland (Rotac Light), Lloyd Bilick (Leopard Heavy), BD Soutar-Dawson (Clubman Light), Wayne Bell (Open), Kip Foster (Clubman Heavy) and Rob Landsmeer (Over 40s).
