Supercars Dunlop Series driver Todd Hazelwood will warm up for the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400 by lining up at Round Four of the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in Ipswich this weekend.

Hazelwood, who like all of his Supercar counterparts, started his career in karting before graduating through to the Supercars ranks. He currently sits fifth in the Dunlop Series standings.

The Gold Coast-based South Australian will join with the Harrington Doyle Racing Arrow Karts team as a part of their 10-year celebrations in Ipswich this weekend.

It is the second time that Hazelwood has paired up with the team having finished second on debut in the final round of the 2015 Championship.

“Racing karts is where we all started our careers and I’m sure that I speak on behalf of everyone in the Supercar paddock when I say that we all love getting back out on track in a kart,” said Hazelwood.

“It’s not just a lot of fun but also very physical which keeps you in shape for when we climb back into our Supercar.

“Along with being fun and physical, it’s also very competitive. There’s always very little time between everyone in qualifying and the racing is intense.”

Hazelwood says that he is also honoured to be a part of Harrington Doyle Racing in a special event for the team.

“The opportunity to re-join with the HDR team as a part of a special weekend for the team is a real privilege,” said Hazelwood.

“I first spent time with the team early last year and it was evident there that they run a very professional outfit and put a lot into the sport of karting.”

Hazelwood will be one of three Harrington Doyle Racing entries in the KA1 class with the 20 year-old joining reigning Queensland Champion Scott Sorensen and Townsville’s Luke Flynn.

More than 220 drivers will line up at the event across nine classes with practice held on Friday. Qualifying will be contested on Saturday morning followed by the heat races in the afternoon and the Finals on Sunday.

The Ipswich Kart Club is located on Champions Way, Willowbank. Entry is free for Spectators.
