Karting is a sport that embraces competitors of all ages and backgrounds with inclusivity and equality at the heart of its national strategy to increase the sport’s growth.
A shining example of this is the national Pink Plate event held annually at the Albury Wodonga Kart Club, an all-female race meeting that has been a pivotal experience for many women in karting, including veteran racer Renee Hinds.
Hinds, a 16-year member of the karting community, reflected on her journey and the role of events like the Pink Plate in shaping her confidence and racing career. “It’s great to see that a generally male-dominated sport is recognising that girls of all ages and experience levels can have just as much involvement across all aspects of the sport as the boys do.” said Hinds.
Her first Pink Plate event came six years into her karting journey, a time when she still lacked confidence when racing against male competitors. The supportive environment of a ladies-only event provided a platform for growth, learning, and camaraderie.
Whilst the Pink Plate is ladies-only on the track, Hinds is quick to give a shout out to all the males who support the drivers and the club. “We have so many guys who act as pit crews, officials and volunteers at this event, it’s a real team effort that’s for sure!”
Girls Race Too: Paving the Way for Inclusion
Karting Australia’s Girls Race Too initiative, supported by clubs and state administrators nationwide, aims to create opportunities and foster an inclusive space for women in karting. Hinds praised the initiative’s impact: “It’s such an encouraging initiative, and it is great to see it so heavily promoted and supported by everyone involved, from the national governing body to the clubs.”
Hinds highlighted the importance of gender equity in motorsport, emphasising that everyone deserves the chance to pursue their passions. “It’s about creating access to the sports we love and giving the recognition deserved,” she explained.
Building Confidence Through Supportive Events
Whilst the Pink Plate event has become a cornerstone for women in karting, offering a safe space to grow skills and confidence there is also a national push to ensure that females of all ages are aware that karting is a sport that welcomes them!
“At one of our Australia Kart Championship events this year, there was a Girls Race Too tent that welcomed guest speakers and families—a space for all females to come together with a shared interest,” Hinds shared.
Hinds reflected on her first state title win in Tasmania, a moment that showcased the community spirit. “As I was coming off the scales, all the girls racing that weekend swamped me with a massive group hug. It was a family vibe that meant so much to those younger female drivers,” she recalled.
Achievements on the Track and Beyond
From grassroots racing to podium finishes, women in karting continue to excel. “Here in Tasmania, our crew of girls are consistently running within the top five, with many regularly on the podium,” Hinds said.
The Pink Plate event also celebrates milestones, including Hinds’ memorable 2023 victory at Albury, just four months postpartum. “I stood on the podium with my four-month-old daughter and received my trophy from Leanne Tander,” Hinds said proudly “That was a really special moment.”
Inspiring the Next Generation
Events like the Pink Plate and initiatives like Girls Race Too highlight the importance of breaking down barriers in motorsport. Karting Australia remains committed to creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where girls and boys can compete equally.
As Hinds and countless others demonstrate, karting is more than a sport—it’s a community, a family, and a
platform for unforgettable experiences.
The next Pink Plate event is coming up at the Albury Wodonga Kart Club over the Australia Day weekend. Spectators are encouraged to attend and are free to enter. For more information please contact media@karting.net.au.
