Several members of the Eastern Goldfields Kart Club in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia had a lucky escape today.
With Kalgoorlie and the surrounding area experiencing high winds in excess of 120 km/h, officials red flagged the racing during the third heat of the Rookies category due to safety concerns and low visibility.
Within five minutes of this occurring, and the Desiree Kenan Control Tower being evacuated, disaster struck with the tower being completely demolished.
As can be seen by the photo below, pieces of the control tower – including chairs, tables, doors, glass and even money from the race entries – were spread across the main straight.
The tower had stood up to many storms – and even a cyclone – during the past 12 years but it seems today’s storm was just too much.
Despite today’s disaster, Club Members have already started the rebuilding process asking for anyone who can donate time, materials or money to please contact Hayley Littlely on hayleymariel@hotmail.com
The Club’s major annual event, the ‘Dash for Cash’, featuring the RollaSole Invitational KZ2 race and also KF3 action, is less than seven weeks away. Despite today’s setback, the club wants to reassure everyone that this race meeting – will go ahead.
