Dunlop V8 Supercar Series competitor Macauley Jones is making a return to the top level of Australian karting this weekend and the shape of the sport impresses him.
Jones, who is competing in the KZ2 class at Round Two of the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in Puckapunyal, says that the professionalism of the sport has increased significantly over the past four years.
“The presentation of the teams, transporters and venues has increased significantly since I last raced at this level in 2012,” said Jones, who finished with the third fastest time during practice today.
“It’s great for the sport to be able to come here and see such professionalism in karting.”
For Jones, the weekend is more about staying sharp in between his V8 Supercar commitments and also having some fun behind the wheel.
“I love karting, it’s a lot more relaxed than in the V8 Supercar world. There’s no pressure, it’s just about going out there having fun and enjoying it,” said Jones.
Jones has re-united this weekend with his former team Tom Williamson Motorsport while his father Brad Jones is assisting in the pit area.
Continuing the V8 Supercar flavour at this weekend’s event is Jones’ fellow Dunlop V8 Series driver James Golding, who is lining up alongside Jones in the elite KZ2 class and Steve Richards, who is trackside with his son Clay who is competing in the KA3 Senior class.
Practice for the 250-plus competitors was contested throughout the day with qualifying and the opening heat races to be contested tomorrow. The finals, all of which will be streamed live on www.karting.net.au, will be contested on Sunday.
