Australian Pierce Lehane has landed back in Australia today with extra baggage – the Rotax Max Euro Challenge Champion’s trophy.

The Sydney-sider secured the crown during the final round of the Series at the Genk circuit in Belgium on the weekend.

Driving for the Strawberry Racing outfit, Lehane was victorious in the pre-final to amass enough points and become the first Australian to claim the Champions trophy in the Euro Challenge.

Lehane failed to finish the final on the weekend but it mattered little as his dominance of the year was already complete.

“To be the first Australian to win the European Rotax Championship is an amazing feeling,” said Lehane.

“It was an incredible season from start to finish, we were always at the front when the points were handed out and this is what won us the championship.

“A big thanks has to go to Strawberry Racing for there amazing support and belief in me, my whole family and all of my friends for all their support this season.”

Courtesy of his victory, Lehane will now become the 13th driver to fly the Australian flag at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final in Portugal during November. The remaining 12 spots will be decided when the Rotax Pro Tour comes to a climax at the Ipswich circuit in Queensland on October 2-4.
