Reigning KA1 Australian Champion Liam McLellan got his first taste of the new Vortex DVS engine on Thursday and he was immediately impressed.
Testing aboard his Championship-winning JC Kart at the Ipswich circuit in Queensland, McLellan said that he felt like “a kid again jumping from a junior engine to a senior engine.”
“To experience the power of the DVS, especially after driving every different type of engine over the past eight years that I could, was awesome,” said McLellan.
“I honestly felt like a kid again jumping from a junior engine to a senior engine that had a heap more power.
“Overall the lap times were just about as quick as a KZ2 around Ipswich but you don’t have gears, nor front brakes. I wasn’t around karting in the old Formula A days but they tell me that is what it was like back then – every time you got in the kart you got a huge rush.”
McLellan indicated that he grasped the tuning and starting of the engine very quickly.
“I had JT (Jon Targett) go through the starting procedure with me because it had been a long time since I’d been push started in a direct drive kart. It only took me a couple of goes and the engine fired very easily,” said McLellan.
“Tuning the engine was pretty simple to grasp and maintain throughout a session.”
McLellan will begin his title defence next weekend during the opening round of the Australian Kart Championship in Dubbo.
