South Australian Sprintcar Ace Luke Dillon will move from the dirt track to the bitumen next week to tackle Australia’s best kart racers at Round Two of the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in Monarto.
The Cherry Gardens resident will line up in the toughest class of Australian karting – KZ2. It is in this class where competitors use a six-speed gearbox with an International specification engine to reach speeds in excess of 130 km/h.
“It’s going to be a real challenge for me, the guys I’m racing against are the best in Australia in bitumen karting,” said Dillon.
Dillon’s record on the dirt track is impressive with victories in the World Series Sprintcars Championship, South Australia Titles and four Australian Formula 500 crowns. However, the 34 year-old is under no illusions how difficult the challenge he faces next weekend will be.
“I’m entering the weekend with no expectations. Some of these drivers are good enough to be competitive on the World stage in bitumen karting, I’ve grown up on the dirt tracks so this is a whole new world for me,” said Dillon.
“For me it’s simply about going out and having some fun while keeping some fitness up during the Speedway offseason. These karts are extremely physical and certainly get your heart racing every time you get behind the wheel.”
Dillon will be campaigning an Italian-made Tony Kart that he recently purchased from V8 Supercar driver Scott McLaughlin, who used the kart as a part of his training in between V8 Supercar rounds.
A total of 220 entries have been received across eight classes for Round Two of the Australian Kart Championship with practice for the Senior classes being contested on Friday May 22. Qualifying and the heat races for all classes will be held from 8:30am on Saturday May 23 ahead of the finals on Sunday May 24.
